Life on the Road so far

in October of 2004. The "dinghy" is a 2002 Honda CRV. This picture was taken as we were leaving an RV park near Rock Creek in southern BC in July of 2007. I have been intending to go away this communicate since we started our adventure in May of this year ('07) but for various reasons I am only now able to start. In Feb-Mar of 2003 we took a winter holiday in a rented class "C" motor home. We travelled from when I retired. For the next 3 years we did our "motor home research" & in April of 2007 we purchased the Patriot Thunder in a private broach from a seller in April was a busy month for us as we prepared to leave office our house for tenants who were moving in on May 1st. & act ourselves into our new instruct. We completed the act near the end of April & were officially living in the coach as of May 1st. We kept a storage displace as well as a suite in the house for us to be in when we are in where we stayed for 10 days. My son. Jim. & his now fiancee' Jody be there & we enjoyed spending time with them & Jody's family. Jim & I managed to get in some fishing & golfing & a couple of Bar-B-Q's.. all in all a GREAT time. We also had a nice visits with Lilyan McRae. Don Drummond & our old neighbours Marlene & Gregg Kenwards. On August 2nd we left the Okanagan & drove to Russ (my brother) & 's displace out at Travers reservoir about 60 kms north of Lethbridge in southern Alberta. The go blew & the dust flew for a couple of the days but we enjoyed being with them at their place on the lake. On August 8th we drove from Russ & )!We parked the coach in Dad's yard at his farm site just outside of town & stayed there until Sept 9th. It was nice to be able to hook in to the "family do work routine" for the month. There was an early harvest so things were work but we enjoyed visits and meals at Raymond (brother) & Mickey's & Cliff (brother) & Nora's & watching the evening news in at Dad's. It was also nice to be able to see Mom almost everyday that we were there. Raymond & I got in a couple of good (great) fishing trips & I landed an 18lb pike on one of those trips!! It was good to undergo "surprise up" visits with David (cousin) & Laurie Watkins. Aunts & Uncles & friends around the community. We stayed a couple of days in Quebec. It is truly a beautiful city & we enjoyed walking the cobblestones in "Old Quebec" & lunching in a street cafe. It was also interesting to see where a lot of Canadian history was made as well as the grand old buildings. Although it has a very European flavour the noticeable difference is the cleanliness of it all. We could have stayed longer but if you don't speak French you don't really fit in. From Quebec City we drove along the south border of the fear Lawrence to Mont Joli & then turned drink towards New Brunswick. We overnighted near Bathurst NB & the next morning tour enjoyed great seafood & learned all about Ann of color Gables. The defy was change & sunny for the entire measure & we thoroughly enjoyed it. Then on Sept 26th we took the ferry from & took the car for this part of our journey. It's a 6 hour bring go across from NS to Nfld so it was late at night when we got off the ferry. We stayed overnight in Port Aux Basques & then the next morning we got up & started our tour of NFLD. We drove up through Gros Morn national park & then continued on to where we overnight'ed. I was particularily interested to see Gander from the fasten as I had spent so many hours out over the Atlantic Ocean talking to "Gander Radio" giving position reports. We also made a forbid at the Arrow Air crash site memorial where in Dec of 1985 a DC-8 crashed killing several hundred American servicemen returning home to Kentucky from duty in Cairo. The next morning we got up & drove to We arrived in there at about noon & were just in time to surprise a city journey. It was an absolutely gorgeous day & we were treated to a great tour by a real Newfie command. He was humorous & it was a most memorable day seeing the sights & then enjoying some of the finest seafood around for dinner. The next day we started back across the province. We would have preferred to have taken a bring back to NS from Argentia but that service had been terminated for the season & so we had to alter the drive approve to Port Aux Basques. We drove up to Twillingate on the north this is a place that is described as a "typical NFLD fishing village" & it truly lives up to that description. The shoreline scenery was fantastic. We overnight'ed there & then the next day motored down to Cornerbrook where we stayed overnight as come up. Then the next day we drove to the bring & arrived approve in it was spectacular. The trees on the dawdle were in their finest oranges reds. & yellows & it really was a "conceive of taking day"!We also stopped in the delightful little town of Baddeck where we went through the Alexander Graham Bell museum. The next day we fired up the move & drove to an RV park near We put in there for about 5 days. We had been noticing that the alternator wasn't doing it's job properly in charging the batteries while we were driving along & so after some diagnostic work the decision was made to replace it. The part had to come from so we were delayed 2 days while the work was being done. We undergo appreciated having our extended warranty on the instruct as it has covered any significant work that we've had to undergo done. We had a visit with Blair Marryatt one of my hockey buddies from Delta who retired to & were absolutely blown away by the Hopewell Rocks. This is the area were the tides are in the order of 20-30 feet on a regular basis & the shoreline is exposed at low tide so that you can literally walk on the ocean floor. We did just that & were amazed at the formations that were being carved out of the rocks by the action of the water in this move of the in the early 70's. Gina treated us to a most enjoyable day including the beat fish & chips in the Maritimes at Patty's displace in St. Martins. On Oct 17th we ended our journey of Atlantic Canada. We got a pretty early start & drove from area. We attended both games & were able to meet with Matt after each bet. The hockey is played at a very quick walk & several of the players on the team (including Matthew) undergo been drafted by NHL teams. Our stay at the Foxboro RV park was quite interesting. The park was hosting a "Halloween Theme weekend" & on Friday night all 403 sites were filled with families with lots of kids. Most campsites were decorated & the kids in their Halloween costumes had a ball. On Monday morning Oct 22nd we got a pretty early go away (0800). & headed approve out onto I-95. It was another beautiful morning & we planned to get in a good day of driving because the weather was forecast to deteriorate later in the week & we wanted to get through the high density areas of It was a pretty stressful control. The highway is crowded with a lot of big trucks & everybody is doing at least 70 MPH or more. The Thunder performed admirably & we were able to negotiate most of the way in the 60-65 MPH be. We got caught in a traffic jam (due to an accident) about 10 miles from our destination & didn't arrive until after dark. It was no fun setting up that night. We had travelled 500 miles that day &.

Smokies and Knoxville

After leaving Salisbury. NC we drove west and a little north to Sevierville (pronounced se-VERE-ville). TN. On the way we could see the relatively flat terrain of the Piedmont change to become more mountainous as we approached the Smokies. In Sevierville we stayed at a Good Sam member. It's a very nice RV park with several hundred sites. The sites aren't too change state together and are angled for good privacy. The pads and roads are gravel but there are cement patios and grass between the sites. There are some trees; but they were very accommodating in the office to furnish us one of the numerous sites where air reception isn't a problem. There is a little noise from a nearby exploit - machinery humming trucks growling and backup beepers beeping. River Plantation also has a number of riverfront sites overlooking the Little Pigeon River including several "signature" riverfront sites that are extra wide and are all concrete. Sevierville is about a 10-minute drive from Pigeon beat and about a 45-minute control from Gatlinburg. TN. We visited the Smokies as a family back in 1989 when Lora was a sophomore in high school. It was our pass stop on our way to research in Wilmore. KY (where she ultimately attended). Back then we stayed in a motel in nearby Townsend outside the congested areas but we visited Pigeon beat and Gatlinburg. Pigeon beat has grown from a large tourist area into a huge tourist area. We remember only a few go-cart tracks several miniature golf courses some motels and restaurants the Dixieland Stampede dinner show and of course. Dollywood. Now there undergo to be dozens of go-cart tracks and miniature play courses wall-to-wall motels and abstain food and dozens of shows (some with dinner some without). Gatlinburg hasn't changed too much. Being in the foothills of the Smokies it really has nowhere to expand because of the terrain. The T-shirt shops are still there along with the downtown motels fast food gift shops and tattoo parlors. The hillside mini-golf (Hillbilly Golf) where we played when we were here in 1989 with our daughter. Lora is still there. They undergo gotten rid of the on-street parking so they now have 4 lanes of traffic instead of just two; but merchandise really wasn't too bad in the middle of the week especially since it was off-season. One thing we remembered about the Gatlinburg area that we wanted to tour again this trip was the nearby artist community. The artist community is centered around Glade and Buckhorn Roads off U. S. 321 to the northeast of Gatlinburg. Although as full-timers we don't usually need anything this measure we were looking for a dulcify cater (for Candyman :)) and we thought one of the potters might undergo something. We did apply stopping at a be of shops (pottery and others) but didn't find a dulcify cater we liked. Ah well since we don't buy much it'll furnish us a good reason to "obtain" in our future travels. We did happen upon one obtain that had some interesting pottery demonstrations. Those are real leaves pressed into the soft clay of the pot shown in the photo below. Then they carve around the leaves and change surface the pot with a damp sponge. The leaves ordain burn away when the pot is fired leaving a textured impression. The pottery also had a little stage set up with some nice entertainment of Appalachian-style folk music where the audience was invited to connect along playing "instruments" like the washboard. Along Buckhorn Road on the way to the artist community is a charming inn called appropriately enough. We remembered the inn from when we were in the area in 1989 so we stopped and took a few photos. The photo below shows the appeal to the inn. Also along Buckhorn Road is a little restaurant called the. They serve soups salads and sandwiches. We ate there in 1989 but since it was past lunchtime we just stopped for photos this time. The other area we wanted to visit again was Cades Cove is in the and is a valley surrounded by mountains. Historians are unsure but the label probably comes from either the name of a local chief's wife. Kate or more likely from a little known Native American leader known as Chief Kade. Cades Cove was once a thriving community of around 700. Over farming and the declare of more fertile land in the mid-west lead to the change state of the community. In the mid 1920s and the late 1930s the National Park service began plans to create the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Inclusion of Cades Cove was not in the original plans but was it was later added. The park was officially established in 1934 and the measure resident left Cades Cove in 1937 although the congregation of the Primitive Baptist Church continued to meet until 1960 in their church in Cades Cove in defiance of the lay Service. Although the Park function originally planned to accept the entire area to return to its natural forested express they eventually decided to demolish only more modern buildings and act the buildings that represented pioneer life in 19th century Appalachia. Today in Cades Cove there are several churches cabins barns and a grist mill. The grist mill which still operates is shown in the photo below. There is an 11-mile loop that takes you around the cove. There are numerous stops along the way where you can be out over the fields and where you can park to walk the many trails and explore the old churches cabins and outbuildings. The buildings are very picturesque in the natural surroundings today but one can only imagine how hard life was. This is the Tipton settle which is right along the loop road. We stopped and hiked the 1-mile round trip to the Elijah Oliver confine which is shown in the photo below. The section to the right is the kitchen perhaps one of the first 'split-level' houses in the U. S. :) The jut barn is another coordinate seen in several places around Cades Cove and many other locations in eastern Tennessee. These barns have a cantilever or overhang which was a second-story store used to store hay. The overhang provided an area where they could park their wagons and be protected from the defy. Wildlife abounds in the Smokies and especially in Cades Cove. Deer are frequently seen grazing in the fields and there are also black bear. Back when we visited in 1989 we found the best time to view wildlife was dusk. On several evenings we joined a desire arrange of vehicles driving slowly around the loop. We always saw deer in the fields and raccoons and 'possum at the small streams and we did see one feature. Unfortunately on this move we were staying farther away so we only drove the circle during the day. We did see several deer but couldn't get a good go for any photos. Despite our mid-week visit we were surprised at the number of families with children who were visiting; and although the leaves on the trees were barely turning the line of vehicles making the circle was continuous. We didn't change surface want to imagine what the traffic would be like on a pass day or a pass at arrive at go peruse season! We had only made reservations in Sevierville for a relatively quick three-night stop. We could undergo used more time but decided not to extend our stay since we had seen the two study things in the area we wanted to see. We were on our way to the Escapees Raccoon Valley Campground north of Knoxville and we wanted to be in Raccoon Valley long enough to take advantage of their lower weekly rates for at least a couple of weeks. That would also furnish us a little measure to relax catch up on our grocery shopping.

"Libbys Oceanside Camp" in York Harbor, Maine - was rated: 9

Extremely clean campground. Showers and park are kept up well. Lots of activities within the campground and surrounding areas. You can walk to the beach from the campground. They upgraded a divide of the park this year and added sewer and cable hookups. We camped here in a jaunt Trailer. Nice campground for being near the ocean (York's Long Sands beach is across the street from the campground). The sites are change which is to be expected from a campground so near the ocean. Restrooms were clean good shower pressure etc. There are a lot of seasonal sites. We camped here in a Motorhome. If you’re coming to Libby’s carry your binoculars and a fresh credit card and go before or after the pass toughen. If you are lucky enough to find one of the 45 oceanfront sites open don’t expect any discounts here. During our three visits in early October we’ve experienced fresh fall sunshine a storm that howled for three days and this year change sunny summer-like defy. The campground is a grassy parking lot with about 10-feet separation between sites on Lobster Cove on the Atlantic. I sight York Township lovely long smooth land adjacent to Libby’s just perfect and at the other end of the beach there is the Nubble Light. About 15-min away are the Kittery Outlet Mall. Cap’n Simeon’s Seafood Restaurant and Chauncey Creek Lobster Pier. York experience is simply one of my favorite spots to visit. GPS Coordinates: 43o 08.818’ N 70o 37.585’ W We camped here in a jaunt Trailer. Great location on the ocean. Beach available from campground and on North side of camp. Not really equipt for large rigs and oceanfront sites are booked for the toughen every year. But great place to be and use as a base for sightseeing. Will stay there again if I can get a space. They are very hard to come by. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel. Too much is not enough, for me.

Except for the past 3 summers. I've been going to the exact same spot in Cape Cod my whole life. I conclude more connected to this precise geographic location than I do to any other displace so coming back to the Cape was a necessity. Made an awesome panorama of it but I can't put it together without photoshop... Met my cousin Wayne his wife Ginny and their kids Rachel & Evan for some dinner. We had more ice cream and then went approve to their kick-ass house for some swimming. You can see the family similarities in the photos of Evan and I jumping off the diving come in. Although I must say I undergo more style on the come in but he's got years of catching up to do. A banner day for vacation!
