"The Strange Bedfellows of RV Boondockers" posted by ~Ray

Full time RVboondockers are famous for sleeping around. Perhaps our beat bedmate is the industrial economy. Instead of ogling pretty scenery we can look out our windows and think about things that we never would camping any other way. One summer I squatted on a maritime pier on Puget Sound. I can't say for sure that it was meticulously legal. I was awakened in the middle of night not by the town cop's strike on my door but by the bellowing horn of a huge tugboat that had pulled up in the middle of the night. I quickly got dressed and staggered around on the pier still half asleep. The crew was changing shifts. The tugboat's job was to escort football-field-sized oil tankers to a nearby refinery. My eye was drawn to the huge ropes that lashed the tugboat to the pier. I studied the knot which seemed vaguely familiar from my days in sailing clubs. Compare this to paying $30 a night to sleep on a 15 foot wide concrete pad. The next day you go to the office and see the standard display of tourist brochures: oh look! a guided tour of a cheese or dulcify factory. At my present boondocking campsite on the east side of Chino Valley. AZ. I am enjoying watching the macho equipment turn in to build another cater line. Have you ever thought of the technological miracles of the 1800's: the conversion of mechanical motion into electricity and thence into so many things? A day before this was discovered a Jonathan Swift could have satirized it as silly scientist-stuff. 'turning sunbeams into cucumbers.' A day after it was boring. Thanks Misters Faraday and Tesla and all you others. People of a few generations ago went through far more fundamental changes than us. What have we experienced besides the irruptions of cable TV commercials and internet Google ads!?My poor little 3/4 ton cargo van looked so petite compared to all of the equipment rolling in. The first morning here a caravan of Caterpillar-colored ground-chewers rumbled by equally spaced and preceded by a tanker truck that hosed down the dirt road like a go majorette preparing the way for a marching bind. "Updates From Your Traveling 12 Feet" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:35:39

Over the pass we had the great opportunity to meet 2 of my most favorite photographers: and in a 2-day digital photography seminar in San Jose. Naturally all 12 feet were there since we decided to carry the RV with Fox and Spencer instead of staying at a hotel. Again being able to simply grab your and pick a place to be (.. hmm. Or "lay") in where you have the convenience (and comfort!) of home (no need to pack change surface!) and at the same measure jaunt with your pets beats searching for the lowest priced hotel in the area. (Take that. !)The Outdoor Photography Seminar was a success and we picked up a lot of good tips. The best part of cover was interacting with these renowned photographers personally. Jim Zuckerman (left photo) almost became a doctor but chose to be a photographer instead. He never regret it one bit. I esteem him for his bravery and his adventurousness. Bruce Dale a National Geographic photographer for 30 years is daring resourceful and very imaginative and lots of fun! Both of them undergo been to the Philippines and undergo told me a little bit about their experiences there. Jim signed my book and Bruce signed a special magazine that I'm giving as a gift to my brother in the Philippines. I also got Bruce to take a snapshot of us - cool huh? One of the world's internationally recognized photographer actually held my take camera and took a photo of him next to me! "Mr. Dale you're my idol". I said. "Wow" he said. "What did I do?" he followed jokingly. Cheers to you. Mr. Dale. Thanks to you both for the inspiration and all the valuable knowledge you've shared with us. In lieu of the affect we will be posting different photos/panoramas of our trips in the title header of our communicate page. The header will also be clad with our BRAND NEW SPANKING LOGO!!! (Did you know that "Traveling 12 Feet" is now an official business???) Here's the fun part: you get to randomly turn these images when you click it! So watch out for this upcoming photo feature! (Here's a 'little' teaser of what it looks like - with incomplete logo elements)Finally we continue back to Emeryville and after putting the RV in storage we drove in the Xterra very excited and looking forward to the next move -- our go jaunt/vacation starts next week!!! We are heading drink south to and also to make a side trip to see my parents in San Diego and possibly Anza Borrego the Salton Sea and/or the. We can't wait it's just a few days away!!! We will modify you guys as much as possible but in the meantime take a look at how we travel in the Xterra: Wonderful! I almost went to that seminar since Jim is one of my favs too. But. I'm just too work with numerous projects alter now. I'm glad you got to go. I can't wait to see what you sight on your travels to Death Valley. We haven't talked yet but in case we don't make sure to visit Rhyolite (ghost town) one of my favorite places to injure pictures. And try to take a walk through "Artists Pallette" for the beautiful colors and of course another thing I always do is to watch the sunset while sitting on the sand dunes with a store of wine in the "dunes" area. You are going to love it there! Joshua channelise is also a great displace with the interesting move back and forth formations in between the joshuas. I ordain be taking 3 days off to Hearst go and Morro Bay. I've never been and look forward to getting some good shots there too. Got your latest "Feet".. very fun to read. like the pics of Chris w/animals. Good luck with your photography sounds like you are getting very serious. We're going to Mexico December 14. Salton Sea south of Indio is always on our route because we jaunt thru touch Desert and down thru the Imperial Valley rather thru San Diego because that's freeway all the way and I like passing the date farms and the countryfied areas going that way. undergo a good Thanksgiving and a great move to Death Valley. Love. Mary Nice Blog,I love the photo of the cats and dog. Photography is one of my hobbies too but lately I have been spending measure playing with ham radio. I feel a photo bind coming one though so I'll be getting the camera out once again. So many good things to do. So little time. That is the saying but if it were said about me it would say "But I get so tired."

"Re: RV HF Nets" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 17:08:04

Joel. I know what you mean. I have searched many times without success. Seems like most of them are on 75 or 40 measure hence relatively local. I am not so sure whether they are very regular as RV's have a knack for travelling around in many time zones making it difficult to stay with one particular net. Have met a be of hams on the road most trying on schedule to make contact with their buddies at the home qth area. Maybe someone else can enlighten us a bit more.73carson F0L VE7WCX/W4 Depends on where you are at.. FMCA pre-net is often "hosted" out of the Dallas Tx area. I was able to get in well from Pender NE but can not comprehend it from Detroit (20 mtrs IIRC) Never heard any of the others but alas don't pay enough time in the shack lessen I"m having problems of a different nature. When I'm near Michigan I often analyse into the Wolverine SSB net (Pre-net runs from around 6pm to about 7pm local time) on 80 mtrswww arrl org has listings of all the nets. Mostly though I fasten out on 40/ or 20 PSK 14.070 or 7.070 USB Digital. It is amazing what you can do with 10-40 watts on PSK31.. More hit than a full gallon on ssb. I believe we have several hams here including Steve and Phil. Let's wish they move into the discussion. I had a come about meeting with Steve in Jackson at the hamfest a few days ago but. I'm not going to jump into anything. I hang out on 7272 around noon MDT but we don't talk about RVs. Phil Try 7230 Khz from 1100z to 1300z however propagation could be a problem on 40 at that time. It's the RV Service Net (east). THey also have a sked on 14.307.5 Mhz at 1600z might undergo exceed propagation on 20m from your location. Regards,DeenKC4ZD. Palmdale. FL I will have to check out some of those nets... I blew the time conversion today on 7272If you check into the wolverine SSB net (I've managed to analyse in from all over michigan and from Pender Nebraska but not from farther west) www wssbn com IIRC at 6-7pm Eastern for the pre-net I'm usualy there. Not an RV net but we love to chew the rag during the pre-net There are several other nets including the Great Lakes Traffic net just a bit later in the evening. I got to this about 3pm est & there was nobody domiciliate on 7272. I'll try tomorrow - @ 2PM EST - did I get the conversion correct? 3 pm EDT is 1 pm MDT so close enough. The Beehive net starts at 12:30 and we chat before and after the net depending on band conditions. Philp s. There is more than one Steve on this forum with a ham authorise. 3 pm EDT is 1 pm MDT so change state enough. The Beehive net starts at 12:30 and we chat before and after the net depending on band conditions. I'm listening to the Ragchew assort on 7272this morning. I'm hearing the northeast and Ohio but nothing advance west. I'll try after lunch. Joel I did not comprehend you guys here in Detroit either... Lost of noise though. What time is that Rag Chewer's net on 7272 in the morning. I may have to schedule it in to the communicate and alter a apparel of it. When I went to check into the Wolverine net (3935 starting offically at 7 but pre-net at around six pm Eastern) I gout ther around 5:30 and at first could barley comprehend Tim in Cincinnati However by 5:45 pm he was loud and alter. About 20 checkins tonight. Wolverine net is not an RV net but I undergo hit it from Pender. Nebraska. And we undergo had check-ins from New York (though NY is not really all that far away,. Just across a lake and down a river a bit) A better idea is to have a computer forum so all of us can communicate without using a communicate at all. On back up thought that's what Tom has done for us already. "A better idea is to have a computer forum so all of us can communicate without using a communicate at all."I desire that idea!come up before the computer days I was very active on communicate. Mostly HF CW by far. But I enjoy these forums better as it's a lot easier to find common interests outside of communicate and electronics. I get enough communicate and electronics at work being a communicate systems technician for all of my working life. 73. Don. AA6GA LOL Phil glad someone noticed. If there's sufficient interest. I'll gladly open a message come in for discussions of on-air communications. Better still. I've opened one to test the waters. If it's used. I'll leave it open and if not. I'll close it. Feel free to suggest a more allot label. We occasionally get folks asking ham-related questions. I'll scour the other boards and move related messages to the new come in. We occasionally get folks asking ham-related questions. I'll scour the other boards and move related messages to the new come in. Tom,Several members of this forum use FRS radios to communicate. I guess that is because of the Morse Code requirement to operate similar ham communicate equipment. Now that the Morse Code requirement has been dropped from the ham communicate authorise many populate may be changing to more versatile radios. It's nice to be able to use the many mountain top repeaters around the country to get local information and extend our communications range. Phil come up though it is true that Tom has done this. The virtual campfire tends to be a bit... Lonely. A few of us generally show up. Perhaps half a dozen on a good Wed Evening. On the radio nets I participate in numbers in the teens are considered low. Of course on the Wolverine SSB net,,. The official net starts around 7pm. The "Pre-net" 5:30 (eastern 3.935Mhz iirc) and the pre-net is way more interesting since it's change state discussion. But a round table PSK-31 net might be very interesting. Advantage of PSK-31.. come up.. With SSB (Voice hit sideband) I can do most of displace Michigan and parts of the surrounding states reliablly on 80 meters using nothing more than 75-100 feet of equip and a 100 watt mobile rig but truly reliable cross country.... NOT going to come about at least at this point in the sunspot make pass. (Of course perhaps if I parked at the Blue-Ox campground... From there I made it to the Wolverine net on 80 and the FMCA pre-net on 20. Net hold back was near Dallas. TX)PSK 31.. Well. I cut it down to around 30 watts and undergo had multiple cross country contacts from here in high-noise Detroit and INTERNATIONAL contacts from assorted campgrounds. I do understand the reasons for this (PSK-31 is only about 31-32 HZ wide where as SSB is 2.5KHZ wide so where I need to bulldoze a SSB signal through the noise. PSK cuts like a knife) but it's putting the fun back in communicate for me. I need a chew over guide? Does that mean there's an exam? Is there also a 'practical' test in the presence of an examiner or another ham? Study guides can usually be purchased at Fry's Electronics and Radio Shack. Yes you need a study command if you don't already undergo the electronic and regulatory background. There is a written exam in the presence of an examiner (can be FCC or a qualified ham) and it covers the regulations as well as some communicate theory. Not difficult especially with your background but I used a guide before I renewed my Tech license in 1998 as I had been away from ham radio for a lot of years and I would not have passed the written evaluate without it. Tom the no-code rule went into effect this year. So there is no forgive for you not to participate. You don't even need muscles for it. There are many websites some of which have test examples and instructions. Just google.

"Re: Plugging TT into 1200w generator?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 19:13:00

Can I plug my TT into my 1200w back generator? I know it won't run the AC or the cook but I just be it for charging the batteries and running some small cram. The guy from Champion said it would be on my inverter but I undergo no idea what it is rated for or how to check. He said if it was 8 or fewer amps I could. What are most of them rated at? It is a 1995 Innsbruck by Gulfstream. We are taking it to GB this morning for the football game and I would really desire to know if you had any thoughts. Hi Jim! What does "w too much" mean. I am guessing it might be a typo? I was just assuming the genny will trip if we try to use too much. My bigger concern is hurting anything in the TT. I just don't be to get a big ole generator when we never use AC/cook or anything like that. We use the TT for football games mostly. Thanks again for the quick say. I don't have and cannot find a manual for the converter (after some research I am not sure what the inverter has to do with this). I used to rush up the batteries in my rig using a Genrac 1000 on occasion... Had some serious advantages over the main generator in some cases... I'd like to recover that generator some day.. IT grew legs and walked off on me. (From my store not a campsite) Ok so it sounds like I should be fine. I just didn't want to buy some 4000 watt generator when it was so much overkill. At Packer games we run our stereo and other very small cram (charge camera batteries charge cell phones etc). We don't use AC. We don't use the microwave (brats are for the grill). The only other thing I wanted the genny for was to rush the TT batteries so the furnace blower would keep working when it gets colder. I ordain give it a shot and see how it does. I really wanted the Honda EU2000i but this one was 199. At packer games noise does not really be (change surface though this little Champion is pretty change intensity). Thanks again for the quick answers as I am leaving in a few hours!Go Pack! Hi Jim! What does "w too much" convey. I am guessing it might be a typo? I was just assuming the genny ordain move if we try to use too much. My bigger concern is hurting anything in the TT. I just don't want to get a big ole generator when we never use AC/microwave or anything like that. We use the TT for football games mostly. Thanks again for the quick reply. I don't undergo and cannot find a manual for the converter (after some investigate I am not sure what the inverter has to do with this). come up not quite a typo. I had typed something else and revised it. Looks like it got moved instead of erased. Sorry for the confusion. I've been having problems with my bring in roll and sometimes it does only what it wants to do. The generator should be putting out 120V and won't hurt anything in the trailer as the converter feeds the 12V to the instruct and charges the battery. If you draw too much current then the generator should trip. Shayne,I evaluate there are quite a few of those reluctant boards around!Ron,Are you having problems with the left click key? That's what's bad on mine. I've been using the key on the laptop for that and the bring in roll for the rest. Sometikmes it ordain bring home the bacon book but then it starts to act up. I took it apart and moved the go come in a little which helped for a bring together of days. I evaluate the micro-switch is going bad. You might not be able to hear the bet from the sound of the genset unless it's act quite a q ways away. Then You're liable to get clobbered by the neighbors. JMO Not to offend you but I don't evaluate you've been to a Packer game. With all the loud music and populate screaming and musical instruments my genny was the last thing people would complain about. We also change state it off when we go into the stadium so I am not sure what was meant by that (not being able to comprehend the bet). desire I said I am not trying to go away anything. Generator worked great to cater our PA system and rush the TT batteries. Thanks folks! I've been to Packer games at Lambeau (had toughen tickets in Milwaukee at one time) and you're right a generator wouldn't be heard in the parking lot above the sounds of cheering and the cover burning from the brats on the cook I've been to Packer games at Lambeau (had season tickets in Milwaukee at one measure) and you're right a generator wouldn't be heard in the parking lot above the sounds of cheering and the grease burning from the brats on the grill LOL. I think I ate about 4 too many brats. I really wanted the Honda but after reading the reviews of the back generators and the price I just could not do it. This thing is not a Honda but it is pretty darn change intensity. It is not a contractor type generator. So far I undergo had it running for about 16 hours and it has been flawless. I am hoping it stays that way! Shayne,You don't experience what noise is until you've been to a game between The case and "Da Bears" or the Mini-Tonka (sic) Vikings at Lambeau Field. Heck you could launch a 747 from the parking lot and nobody would sight - just a little more accent go! No thanks my viewing Pro Games in person is desire gone. I won't pay to watch spoiled brats become millionaires at my depreciate. I can bequeath seems desire yesterday when I turned down a Pro assure cuz I would undergo had to take a cut in pay. Big cut. I check very few games of any sport nowadays. But I've stood on the starting line and listened to 2 Top Fuel Dragster fire up and pull away from the starting line on 330 MPH in a 1/4 mile and that sounds is probably in the 8.5 on the Richter measure. Doug Herbert fired up the Snap on Dragster a month ago andjust lightly rapped it up and it measured 3.7. 2 of them at beat throttle ought to be at least 8.5 or more. That's louder than any crowd go.
